The 2012 Flips Invitational was the first rendez-vous for all our Airborne Optional Teams this past weekend in Reno, NV. Without exception, every Airborne team did place 1^st ! … We would like to dedicate these Level 7 through 10 First-Place Team awards to our Airborne gymnasts who could not either fully participate on all 4 events, and to the ones who could not participate at all.

Thank you to our Optional Coaches without whom our girls would not have such brilliant results!

It was fun to hear people asking during the meet: "Who are these girls in Teal and Orange? They are amazing!" … Guess we’ll continue to hear that a lot of time this season again! J

Ready for the 2012 Optional Season?

The optional season got underway earlier in December for the Airborne Level 7 Team with the National Judges Cup Qualifier. We will have, once again, a representation from Airborne at the National Judges Cup this weekend (which will be hosted in Indiana) with Kenna Minakawa who got the 3^rd best All Around score out of 79 gymnasts! Way to go Kenna! A lot of the Level 7 Airborne Team girls got amazing scores, by the way, but only the top 6 gymnasts of the 2 level 7 sessions are invited to represent NorCal at this national event. Go NorCal! Go Airborne! Go Kenna!

The rest of our optional teams will have their first meet the following weekend, January 14-15, in Reno, NV, at the Flips Invitational.

Recycle!

SPIRIT has taken over Recycling!

Cans and plastic bottles are now being collected by SPIRIT as an easy ongoing fundraiser. Please dispose of your empty cans or bottles in the designated recycling bins located one on each floor.

We will also be posting bulk "drop off" dates and times so that you can collect cans and plastic bottles at home, and then conveniently drop them here at the gym on these dates, without even getting out of the car.

SPIRIT has collected $81 dollars so far and we just started this project in October. This is really encouraging!

So, from now on, please keep an eye on the trashcans J

End of the Level 4 Season

Just a week ago, our Airborne Level 4 Team completed their season with the NorCal State Championships. From the youngest to the oldest ones, our girls focused and gave their very best until the last event. As an outcome, there was an amazing number of girls who broke their personal records during that weekend, in addition to achieving quite a large number of top 3 places on the podium.

Without exception, all the Airborne Level 4 gymnasts made their families and friends very proud, not only because of their performance in this difficult competitive sport throughout this season, but also by demonstrating focus, discipline, and determination at such a young age.

A Brilliant Demo of Airborne Compulsory Teams during State Championships

While our compulsories girls have had a fantastic 2011 season prior to going for the State Championships, there is no such thing as “a done deal” and no individual or team result can be assured. Each meet is different, and when stakes are bigger, pressure usually comes with the package.

During this past weekend, the second of the official Compulsories State Championships took place with the Level 5 State meet. Both our Level 6 and our Level 5 Airborne Teams won the first place of the championship! Of course there were a lot of Airborne girls on the podiums for these two Championship weekends, but every one of our girls simply did awesome. Thanks also to their very supportive team of coaches, the girls did fight very hard to and give their very best.

There were also a lot of amazing individual scores on events, along with jaw-dropping All Around scores.

Ready for State Championships?

Our Airborne Compulsory Teams have had a fantastic season so far...

This is a fact: Airborne rocks.

Our girls have broken records this season and are not ready to stop yet, so get ready for the Grande Finale! Compulsory State Championships are coming, starting tomorrow with the Level 6 State Championships, then followed by Level 5 State Championships the following weekend, and finishing two weeks from now with the Level 4 State Championships.

Doing some Math

This past weekend, 76 Airborne Team gymnasts participated to the Disco-Tech Invitational Meet and proudly represented their Level 4, 5 and 6 Teams. These girls brought a phenomenal number of 75 First Place medals! Almost an average of one 1^st place per Airborne gymnast.

With the 56 2^nd place and 42 3^rd place medals, this brings the average of about 2.3 podiums per Airborne gymnast.

Closing of the 2011 Aloha Invitational

What a great 2011 meet!

The 2011 Aloha Invitational comes to an end and we would like to take a few minutes to thank all of the Airborne Team families who contributed to this amazing success. It was good to see everyone committed to help. And there were a lot of fun moments too!

Thank you for your help during the set-up or the clean up; thank you for running the judges hospitality; thank you for being an announcer or for playing the music; thank you for your help with the donations and preparing the Aloha program; thank you for running the SPIRIT booth or for running the food concession. THANK YOU!

Let’s not forget to thank the children who helped as event timers, runners , or raffle tickets and shout out sellers!

A very special Thank You to the Chairs and Co-Chairs of all the different Committees – which include the four SPIRIT board members and also non-board members – who dedicated a humongous amount of their time throughout the weekend … but also ahead of time in order to prepare and be ready for this weekend. You guys are amazingly devoted, passionate and enthusiastic. THANK YOU!!

The bar has been set pretty high with this year Aloha Invitational’s organization, but with such amazing Airborne Team Families, we are sure we will continue to deliver an outstanding annual meet.

A Great Beginning of the Compulsories Season

After starting the season with a brilliant Begonia Gym Festival meet two weeks ago – where Airborne clearly dominated the weekend, not only for the Teams’, but also Individual results –, today was the conclusion of the two-day meet at PacWest, the Starts Challenge. And, YES, the Stars Challenge was yet another confirmation that Airborne Teams rock! Our girls brought so many medals home, it is fantastic!

In just 2 meets, our girls have progressed and they gained so much assurance that it shows!

Setting a World Record

As part of this year’s National Gymnastics Day yesterday, on Saturday Sept. 17th, we at Airborne have joined the phenomenal number of gymnasts, families, friends and enthusiasts from gymnastics clubs nationwide, and kicked up our feet in a show of strength for the sport, to raise funds for Children’s Miracle Network, and to celebrate “The Year of the Handstand.”

The numbers are in and … we’re proud and excited to announce that we’ve set a new World Record with 20,478 people simultaneously kicking into handstands all across the country today! What a record!

First Intrasquad

The first Intrasquad officially marked the beginning of the 2011-2012 season for the Compulsory levels, levels 4, 5 and 6. It was time for our girls to not only be in a practice meet setting and do a first check of their routines, but also for parents to review their ability to get their daughter ready on time, all dressed up for competition, and hair done. Yes, butterflies and stress were back too, but coaches were present to support and encourage our little ones, and give them warm hugs at the end of their routines to congratulate them for their hard work.

This was also the opportunity for new families to the Airborne Team to have a glance at what to expect with competitive gymnastics: first attempt to get the hair up in a bun, or fix a nice pony tail, catching all rebel hair strands with hair spray and pins.

There will be another opportunity to practice in the same intrasquad conditions prior to the first compulsory meet in September. Parents will get to fine tune their “meet-readiness” skills too: if you work well with a checklist, this will give you a chance to validate it or add to it.

Now back to practice again!

In order to bump up the sales of the Aloha Program Ads, we’ve initiated last season an Incentive Program that would recognize the Airborne gymnasts and families who would put extra effort to sell ads. We’ve then decided to multiply the chances of getting winners by having two different awards: one that would recognize the seller of the most number of ads, and the other one to recognize the seller of the biggest total dollar amount.

The winner of the 2010 Aloha Program Ads first award sold 5 ads out of the total 26 ads sold! Yes! 20% of the ads were sold by this one person. This person actually has always been a great seller in the prior fundraisers held by either SPIRIT or Airborne directly over the past years. We’re glad she is such an enthusiastic and friendly gymnast to be around with!

You will not be surprised to learn that this same person is also the winner of the second award, since she sold for $325 of program ads.

Congratulations to Hannah Tiendas for winning two $50 gift cards: a $50 Target gift card, and a $50 Jamba Juice gift card!!

A lively 12-year old, Hannah is soon to be a 7^th grader. Hannah will be competing Level 6 in the coming Compulsory Season of Gymnastics. Hannah also enjoys softball, diving, and swimming with aquatic mammals.

2011-2012 Season Kicked Off with SPIRIT Elections

SPIRIT held its general meeting yesterday and, it is with great pleasure that we are welcoming the new Board Members:

· Krista Zimmermann joins the board as the VP Meet Liaison – Krista has a rich background in this area that she built while her daughter was training at another gym and she was coordinating the well renowned meet hosted by that booster-club. We are confident that Krista will be doing a fantastic job for SPIRIT

· Lisa Womach joins the SPIRIT board as the VP Fundraising – You’ve already seen Lisa’s contribution to SPIRIT last season as she took the challenging task of producing the Aloha Program booklet. Not only did she do a phenomenal art work with it, Lisa also is very resourceful when it comes to fundraising. We are looking forward to work with Lisa and give a boost to our SPIRIT fundraising .

Odette Agah and Flo Oswald renewed their commitment with SPIRT: Odette signed up again for the role of SPIRIT Treasurer, while Flo will continue heading SPIRIT as the President.

New 2011-2012 Season & Annual Elections

We hope you’ve all received our email today announcing the beginning of the 2011-2012 Competitive Season, along with the Annual Elections. If not, please ask us to be on our email list (just email us at AirborneSPIRIT@yahoo.com).

It is indeed the beginning of the 2011-2012 Competitive Season and with this comes the annual SPIRIT Board Elections.

The SPIRIT Board’s role serves 3 purposes:

· Recruiting, motivating and coaching parents who volunteer for Airborne SPIRIT’s activities

· Organizing fundraiser events for our Airborne Team Gymnasts, including participation to the Aloha Invitational

· Managing fundraising and the SPIRIT operation so that the collected funds will be used to subsidize a portion of the season assessment fee of our team gymnasts

We highly encourage all team parents who wish to do so to be candidates. This is a great opportunity for you to make a difference and help SPIRIT contribute more and more. If you are an enthusiastic parent and if you want to make it happen, just come and join the SPIRIT Board!

So, please, take a minute to review the description of the open positions sent in today’s email (see the nominating form) and email us back your candidature by Tuesday June 14 evening.

We will hold the election on Thursday June 16 at 6:30 PM and the 2010-2011 Board members will go over the achievements of SPIRIT and its goals.

Junior Olympic NIT

Right after the Junior Olympic National Championships, Long Beach, CA, was also hosting on Sunday May 15 the Junior Olympic National Invitational Tournament – Junior Olympic NIT. This tournament was developed to allow an additional 192 athletes an opportunity to compete at the national level and features gymnasts who ranked eighth and ninth in the all-around in each of the eight age divisions at the Level 10 Regional Championships. Chloe Borgese and Alicia Floyd from our Airborne team did not qualify for the JO Nationals since they finished 8^th and 9^th at the Regionals, but this automatically made them eligible for the Junior Olympic NIT. Once again, Airborne was well represented throughout the tournament; these fantastic girls did phenomenally well and brought back a plethora of medals: Chloe brought gold on beam and silver on floor, finishing 4^th all around, while Alice brought bronze on beam and finished 2^nd all around. What a nice ending to this 2010-2011 season for our Airborne Teams!

JO Nationals

While the Western Championship concluded the competition season for the Level 9 gymnasts, our Level 10 gymnasts were closing their season with the JO National Championships. For this last competition, only the top 7 All Around gymnasts in each age division during the Regional Championships (as a reminder, there are 8 Regions) advances to the Junior Olympic Nationals. This year, 4 Airborne gymnasts qualified for this major event: Ellese Sakai-Hart, Gina Costa, Melissa Chuang and Ana Jaworski.

This culmination event of the season has extremely talented gymnasts from all over the nation who strive to become Junior Olympic national champions. In the past, many of these Junior Olympic champions have gone on to make the U.S. National Team; this means getting the possibility to represent the United States in international competition.

Our four Airborne gymnasts, who made it to this honorable event this year, had the challenging task to compete against the top American gymnasts and they did amazingly well! Ellese Sakai-Hart finished 8^th All Around with an AA score of 37.975. Her 9.725 Vault got her the 4^th place in her session. Ana Jaworski, Melissa Chuang and Gina Costa also performed admirably in their sessions and earned respectively 9^th place with an AA score of 37.625, 15^th – AA: 37.425, and 19^th – AA: 36.950.

Gymnastics and Injuries

You’ve probably heard – or even seen – that some of our Airborne Team gymnasts can get injured. So, should you be concerned for your daughter’s health?

First and foremost, keep in mind that gymnastics is an intense sport; gymnasts will practice and put a lot of hours in order to master their skills. There is no other way for them than giving their very best, once they chose to enter the demanding world of competitive gymnastics. As they get better, our little girls climb the levels and will spend more and more time practicing. They will learn more difficult skills, and the risk of getting injured becomes greater. Thankfully, our experienced coaches are here to help control this risk. They will not ask your daughter to do a skill if they see that your daughter cannot try it “safely”, for example. Gymnastics will never be a risk-free environment though, and, of course, accidents can happen. But there is one key element that we tend to forget: your daughter is aware of – and can listen to – her own body. Sometimes, there are signs of an incoming injury like a recurring pain of a join or muscles, and, if this is detected early on and your daughter is treated preventively, she can dodge sitting on the bench for an unwanted long period of time.

So what does this really mean? Do you need to be anxious when your daughter is sore after intense conditioning sessions? Do you need to take her to a physician each time there is some physical pain? No, not necessarily. But you want to raise your level of awareness of what your daughter tells you; you need to somehow determine if this looks unusual. Our Airborne coaches are experienced and can advise you if you are not sure. And on the medical side, it is highly recommended to have regular follow ups: some choose to have them with a doctor in sports medicine, some will go for chiropractor appointments; you name it, as long this is a regular medical follow up with the same person who will understand and learn to know your daughter.

Westerns

Congratulations to our Level 9 gymnasts who just completed their 2010-2011 competition season!

This past weekend, 4 of them competed at the Western National Championship. As a reminder, the top 6 All Around gymnasts at the Regional Championship in each age group qualify to the Western Championship (you can find more detailed rules at: http://www.usa-gymnastics.org/PDFs/Women/Rules/Rules%20and%20Policies/2010_2011_w_rulespolicies.pdf).

Emily Lidlle, Kelly Tan, Nicole Corkill and Sammy Walker from our Airborne Team represented brilliantly our Region – Region 1 – and came home with a few medals. Emily swiped the Bars and Floor podiums, while Nicole got the Beam title.

Very nice job girls!

Regionals

The Regional Championship took place this past weekend in Anaheim, CA. This championship marks the end of this season for those who qualified for it in Level 8, and it is another stepping stone for the Level 9 and 10’s gymnasts toward Western and Junior Olympic Nationals championships.

Welcome to our new blog!

As the SPIRIT Board Members, we've noticed that it is not easy to keep every Airborne Team Family informed of our activities, or even just communicating easily and broadly with the team families. So this is why we decided to start this blog.

As you know, SPIRIT’s goal is to help defray the high cost of competitive gymnastics, and, while the annual Aloha Invitational meet is one of our biggest mean to do so by raising funds, there are numerous other ways that we hardly get to do.
So we hope we will be able to get you all interested in our fundraisers, and get more volunteers to help with coordinating such events.

To All Our Champions

Once again, we would like to congratulate all our Airborne Team Girls. They all worked so hard this season; winning the Perpetual Trophy clearly demonstrates the consistent excellent level of all our teams, Compulsory and Optional.

There were a lot of individual achievements throughout the season as well; we had so many level 4 through 10 Vault, Bars, Beam, Floor and All Around Champions during the meets that we cannot go over the complete list. Although medals are one way of recognizing results, let’s not forget our little champions whose name are not always on the top of the lists, but who, no matter what score they had, have also worked really hard, trained a lot of hours, repeating routines over and over, and improving their skills. These are our Perseverance Champions! They too have given their best during this season; they too deserve a round of applause.
